Diapause Winter cocoons 2024 hatching 2025:
This is a LIVE insect that is overwintering in a phase known as diapause. It essentially means sleeping and undergoing metamorphosis. It should be kept on dry paper towels inside a cool small plastic container with a lid, in the fridge until spring. When you see the leaves starting to bud on the trees outside, you may take the cocoon out of the fridge and place in a suitable container for the insect to emerge. Typically a clear bin or tank works fine with mesh over the top. Be sure to include several climbing sticks so your Luna Moth has a chance to climb up and unfurl its wings. This insect will hatch in Spring 2025.
JULY/Summer 2024 cocoons:
This is a LIVE insect. It will be ready to hatch in about 1 to 2 weeks from the time that you receive it. You will need to put it in a container for it to emerge in, this container should have enough room for it to climb up a stick and let its wings on curl. A cardboard box with a screen on top works fine, and old aquarium works fine. You will want something that you can view the insect through. The adults does not have a mouthpart so it will not need food or water. After it emerges and you have enjoyed its company for a few days you can release it if you live in the area where it is native.
